Start with the pictures you already have

Imagine coming home from a trip with bird photos scattered between landscapes and family pictures. A year later, you want to find those birds without remembering the date or album. This is the situation Feather Trove’s library scanning is designed to address.

Feather Trove finds likely bird images and suggests species on your device. You review the results and develop a personal collection. That is why it leads this guide for an existing iPhone photo library, rather than for a claim about accuracy.

Start with the bird in front of you

If you have one photo and want a free identification suggestion, Merlin is a strong place to begin. For a bird you can hear, Merlin also offers Sound ID. Its official site documents offline identification and a Save My Bird life list.

Merlin is not excluded just because this publication promotes Feather Trove. It is our recommendation for the free individual-photo and sound use cases. You can keep both apps and choose based on the task.

Consider the tradeoffs

Feather Trove requires a subscription for most features; Merlin is free. This edition focuses on Feather Trove’s published iPhone workflow. Check the current store listings for device compatibility and regional availability before choosing.

Both apps’ suggestions need judgment. Poor light, a tiny subject, or an unusual pose can leave you without enough visible detail to confirm an identification. Do not infer certainty from the order in which an app presents candidates.

Our recommendation

Choose Feather Trove when the project is your photo collection. Start with Merlin when the question is one bird—or a song—and a free tool is what you need. Add eBird if you also want a field checklist. These recommendations are about fit; they are not results from a controlled test.
