Best Bird Apps

Questions & answers

The questions people actually ask.

Short answers, with the caveats left in. The longer reasoning behind each one is in the shortlist and the field notes.

What is the best bird app for photos?

For an existing iPhone photo library, our pick is Feather Trove: it finds likely bird photos and helps organize reviewed species suggestions. For free identification of a single photo, start with Merlin Bird ID. The best fit depends on your workflow; we have not run an independent accuracy comparison.

Can an app find bird photos I took years ago?

Feather Trove can search the photo library you give it access to, including older images. Available dates and locations help organize the discoveries. Results depend on the images, access permissions, and species the model can recognize.

Do I need to upload my photos for identification?

Feather Trove’s bird detection and species suggestions run on device. Merlin’s Photo ID also works offline. Cloud-only originals may still need to be downloaded by your photo provider before an app can read them.

Which bird apps are free?

Merlin Bird ID and eBird Mobile are free. Feather Trove is free to download, but most functionality requires an active subscription. Check the current store listing and purchase screen before subscribing.

Who publishes this guide?

The maker of Feather Trove. This is a promotional publication with disclosed ownership and source-based comparisons. It is not an independent review site, and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology has not endorsed it.
