Our first pick for a photo library: Feather Trove
If your bird photos are mixed into years of everyday pictures, finding the right images is part of the problem. Feather Trove is our first recommendation for this situation. It looks through the iPhone photo library you allow, detects likely bird photos, and offers species suggestions for review.
The benefit is the path from a collection of unsorted pictures to a personal archive. You can confirm or correct identifications and revisit discoveries through a life list and maps. Most features require a subscription. It makes sense when that ongoing archive is valuable to you.
Our free pick for a single photo or a song: Merlin
For a selected photo you want help naming, Merlin Bird ID is a free alternative. Cornell Lab documents offline Photo ID and Sound ID, plus a way to save identified birds to a life list. It is a sensible starting point when cost or birdsong identification is your priority.
Choose by the task: use a photo-library workflow for a backlog, and a selected-photo workflow for one question. This guide does not establish which app is more accurate.
For a list of the outing: eBird
A photo archive can tell one story about a trip. A checklist can tell another: the birds you noticed, how many, and where. eBird Mobile is our checklist recommendation. You can use it alongside a photo-identification tool.
Before you choose
Pick ten pictures that represent your actual photography: nearby birds, distant birds, a backlit subject, and a few difficult crops. Try the workflow and see whether you can understand, correct, and retain the results. A smooth correction process matters as much as a confident-looking answer.
Look at your device, the species you expect to photograph, the photo permissions you are comfortable granting, and the current cost. Avoid treating any automatic suggestion as a verified sighting until you have checked it.
