Sound ID

Sound identification works on a spectrogram — a picture of the recording with frequency on one axis and time on the other. A model trained on labelled recordings reads that picture much the way a photo classifier reads a photograph, which is why the problem turned out to be tractable at all.

Merlin Bird ID is the best-known implementation and it runs offline once a regional pack is downloaded. It is genuinely good, and it is the reason to keep Merlin installed even if another app handles your photographs. Treat a suggestion as a strong hint rather than a confirmed record, particularly in a dawn chorus where several birds overlap.
